A government agency that decides what is true and what is not is never going to be accepted after the way Labour went about things and seemed more intent about stopping free speech and silencing dissenters than anything else. A very Communist/Socialist policy I must say.

The last government, via its pulpit of half truths and media slush fund with requirements to tow the line created a platform for tin hat wearers of all descriptions to push their barrow on social media. A lot of Kiwi's have lost faith in the fourth estate because they were complicit in allowing Labour to create the truth they wanted people to hear.

So what were the so called lies and "half truths"? Not a clue? One wonders why chris trotter has attracted so many far right morons.

Try writing in English so people can understand you. Clearly overexcited or upset that this site is not an echo chamber.

If you are hunting for answers on the deception that came from the pulpit then I would suggest you potentially need help to research things and may also prefer an echo chamber rather than a debate....or just believe everything someone in authority tells you.

There was no deception. But as another rabbit hole conspiracist, it is clear that you cannot articulate your delusions. I follow science and use critical thinking in doing so. But you cranks all got the far right wing government that you deserve. The MAGA appeal to the gullible masses worked brilliantly as the wealthy run to the bank laughing on your backs. And Trotter profits on ignorance. Sad.

The Covid mandates led to state sanctioned haters, including the media. I can remember Melissa the news anchor on TV1 dissing and condemning unvaxed people, like she was some kind of entitled expert, and the vaccine claims were just lies anyway. So the MSM have created polarization, and taken sides.

We had a pandemic that killed 1 out of 100 Americans over 65... from all causes. Vaccines were not a wild conspiracy manufactured by most every public health doctor in most every nation on earth. ...to protect people. NZ had the fewest deaths per capita in the developed world according to John's Hopkins. We were lucky here that Covid mutated to Omicron just after mandates.

Free speech is the most pragmatic tool we have for ascertaining truth. It is only by examining all sides of an issue, can the truth be chiseled out like a statue out of stone. But the truth is that there can be many truths; we each have our own experiences, values, mores and life. That is the beauty and wonder of being an individual. Without free and open access to ideas, knowledge, truths and untruths, there can be no free speech. Without free speech, we are little more than slaves.

We must defend all speech – whether untrue, hateful or intolerable, or even absurd, as that is the only way to protect our right to understand the world. As soon as free speech is restricted, that restriction will be used to sway public opinion. As soon as one person can be defined as a heretic for uttering words, then soon everyone on the opposing side of an issue will be labelled as a heretic. The next logical step is for the state to call for acts of heresy as criminal offenses.

As soon as governments and those in power can sway public opinion by restricting free speech, democracy and even our republic will be lost. There is evidence that the United States is already at that tipping point.

I was horrified when about 10 years ago what was then considered the extreme far-right led by the likes of Bannon hijacked Herman/Chomsky quotes on propaganda and manufacturing consent when referring to the centrist media... (pushing the boundaries even further right). It went mainstream with MAGA and its local adherents here. Now former leftist Chris Trotter, who has fallen deep down the rabbit hole carries the torch. Like Russel Brand, he is a former left sympathizer who lambasts mainstream media...audaciously...”for the ideological shift, from right to left” while shamelessly ignoring science end evidence. A media in which GST off food, a capital gains tax, and climate taxes on our largest carbon emitters (as practiced in most of the developed world) are too far left to acknowledge?

Now he claims that this so-called “left” media is “Manufacturing The Truth” by attempting to rein in the monster of our digital disinformation apocalypse that upholds the worst racist and xenophobic language, neo-Nazi propaganda, and a medieval attack on science and reason? He now uses right-wing populist language of “elites” as a scapegoat ...not the real elites who own this land, but those smart people with advanced educations who tell us uncomfortable truths about climate change and pandemics. “Blogs and websites are perfectly capable of turning out journalism as well as commentary.” True, but the vast majority these days are used by cranks to justify our worse paranoid fears and prejudices with emotive rants that lack evidence and rigor. And Chris has joined their ranks This is beyond sad.

And he profits very well.

... "those who enjoy a monopoly on the entrenchment of lies, cannot and will not tolerate competition" sounds quite unintentionally humorous to me. Hey, they're making up more lies over there, they can't do that! Shades of Groucho Marx, Peter Sellers, etc.

And What Chomsky who coined "manufacturing consent" actually said of the internet "exploration through the internet turns out to be a cult generator," Chomsky concluded. "Pick up the factoid here, a factoid there, somebody else reinforces it, and all of a sudden you have some crazed picture which has some factual basis, but nothing to do with the world. You have to know how to evaluate, interpret and understand."

I don't think people are any the wiser, especially young people, most people I speak with don't have a clue what is really happening overseas, and how those outcomes can affect our country, a lot of people still do not know about the 55 million dollar bribe, and yes lots of New Zealanders are sick and tide of all the rubbish been rammed down our throats by the msm, and lets be frank the elite has always tried to control the serfs, or as that Wood bastard stated," the river of filth", the elite really don't like us, but they know they need us.

Thank you Chris, another fine essay.

Mike McRoberts "people have their own ideas. they're wrong"

I'm sure there were many raised eyebrows when the then PM told us "we are your one source of truth"; everyone instinctively knows reality is not like that, so black and white. One of the ways we suspect we're being lied to is when we're presented with just the one side of the story. It's so contrary to the reality we evolved to survive in, a reality that is comprised of opposing forces from the sub atomic level all the way up. It's way bigger than we are.

The legacy media are openly, even proudly, betraying what remains of the peoples trust. Stuff, for example, insist that they will present one side, and one side only, of the debate on climate change. No questioning, no debate, no dissent. They've actually committed to that as paid up (or paid for?) "partners" in international climate hysteria and propaganda outfit Covering Climate Now, the truth be damned.

There are no longer left or right in politics. Both serve the same masters. The policy traces back to Washington DC in the 1940s, sold under the guise of safeguarding democracy and protecting freedom. Yet in reality, it was only ever designed to achieve economic domination for the benefit of the financial titans of Wall Street, London and Switzerland.

Today most governments around the world are essentially Wall Street franchises. Globalists own the media, the banks, the corporations, the political parties and even the think tanks.

It’s a plan where people are just a number on a balance sheet, where human rights are disregarded, truth made scarce, and any reliance on politicians futile. In short, they've abandoned you, with no transparency, no accountability, no testing their decisions.

Even the 3 Waters project was what Wall St bankers demanded, it was never about efficiency, water quality or Treaty co governance, it was only ever about getting the asset into a payment gateway for Wall St.

The global domination control on food and water is helping them close the net.

Evidence includes his cozy relationship with right-wing shock jock Plunket who shares MAGA views https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7QdVul0hmU&ab_channel=ThePlatformNZ . His climate change denial (of sorts)- "Kiwis and their industries pump out just 0.17 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions"- which are ACT, NZ1 and National's talking points... yet forgetting that we are .06% of the world population and are the # 2 worst emitter in the OECD per GDP as stated by the OECD. Support of anti-vaccine rubes attacking parliament. His obsessive focus on "wokeness" (anti-civil rights)...yes some need criticism for being overly earnest, but they are in the minority. And his obsessive attacks (mostly, though not all without merit) of NZ's only left party, the Greens. Not to mention his assertion that NZ media is now too “left” -in an “ideological shift, from right to left”... for starters.

The NZ MSM is too far left, with too many opinion columns masquerading as investigative journalism and they were feeding from the public trough that Labour set up with its special requirements to get funding....

You realise that the IPCC came out and stated that the effects of methane on climate change have probably been overstated by 2.5 times........so please take that off the calculations. i notice the Greens came out a week after this was announced and still badgered on about cows being a major problem with methane.......no mention of the new findings.

I don't believe the current science behind climate change is accurate but am adamant it is happening. The climate industries failure to put population as a key talking point means they lose every bit of credibility.....far too many people are getting rich out of it and all too often they are the ultra rich. Tell me again why the Green party removed their population control policies many years back? Most likely because they are not a genuine green party anymore. Man is ruining the planet, nothing can be more true and the failure to put population as a leading cause will come back and bite us soon enough.

All you have to do is look at the history of the Central American civilisations to see what happens when you don't look after the environment.

I don’t believe that you can draw comparisons between the printing press and internet when technology is so far advanced. Tech like AI can use anyone’s likeness to put them in any situation. How can this be monitored so the general public can determine what is real and fake and by who?
